The Shmil & Zalli i Gjurajt Riverbank Protection Project involves the detailed hydraulic and civil engineering design of flood protection infrastructure near Zdrajsh Verri, within the Librazhd Municipality in central Albania. The project addresses flood exposure, riverbank erosion and sediment-related hydraulic risks affecting adjacent agricultural and forest land through two separate protection sections with a combined designed length of approximately 2.19 km.
The engineering assessment includes hydrological analysis and HEC-RAS hydraulic modelling, evaluating river flow conditions under a 100-year design flood. The hydraulic model incorporates river geometry and cross-sections developed using Civil 3D, enabling the assessment of flood water levels, flow conveyance and the required elevations of the proposed protective structures. The selected engineering solution consists of gabion-based riverbank protection, adapted to the existing river morphology and terrain conditions.
The detailed execution design includes gabion protection layouts, longitudinal profiles, structural cross-sections, embankment stability assessments and construction details, supported by technical documentation for environmental assessment. The project establishes the engineering basis for implementing riverbank stabilization and flood protection measures intended to reduce erosion, improve hydraulic resilience and protect the surrounding land.
